Nuclear Threat Detection with Virtual Forces

Early detection of threats is key to successfully combating nuclear terrorism. To improve the assessment of detection strategies, Alion engineers developed the Constellation of Independent Reasoning for Constructive Analytic Simulation (CIRCAS) in collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory and Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

Created as an open-source tool to help the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), CIRCAS evaluates the performance of nuclear detection systems and sensors in realistic operational environments using virtual forces.

Alion’s solution enables these scenarios to run on a supercomputer faster than in real time for a statistically significant sampling, giving DTRA analysts a range of best- and worst-case outcomes to evaluate.
