Global military spending reached 1700 billion in 2011, announced Friday in New York Secretary General Ban Ki-moon during a high-level forum on the culture of peace held in the Assembly UN General.
"1700 billion was spent last year for weapons. This is a huge price for the people who go to bed hungry, children die for lack of clean water and farmers can not cultivate their land polluted by mines, "said Mr. Ban.
"The world spends twice as much money per day for the UN arms is not spending per year for global missions of peacekeeping, protection of human rights and growth," said Mr. Ban qualifying military spending as immoral.
