US Army troops from the 1st Battalion 27th, Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division have completed a combined arms live-fire exercise (CALFEX) at Rodriguez Live Fire Complex in South Korea.
Conducted as part of Operation Wolfhound Maul, the drill merged company and battalion level assets with platoon level elements to provide troops with experience of working in conditions that reflected real-world combat environments.
1st lieutenant Casey Bell, 25th Infantry Division, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team 1st Platoon leader, said the exercise provided soldiers with a better idea of how their efforts impact every other element in the battlefield.
Robert Best, infantryman for C Company, said that the CALFEX delivered the full-spectrum operations training.
"“The opportunity that we've had to do the live-fire exercise here in Korea, especially the full-spectrum missions incorporating Strykers and other assets, gave us a real sense of what a wartime operation could be like."

According to Best, the climate and terrain of South Korea delivered the critical experience required to deal with the conditions in the Pacific region.
Bell noted that the realistic training helped the battalion to augment current and develop new standard operating procedures (SOPs).
"We've been able to enhance a lot of our [standard operating procedures] and even develop some new ones," he said. "When we return to Hawaii, we are going to have a very solid foundation to build upon."
CALFEX has increased the unit's confidence in carrying out future contingency operations, while ensuring security of interests in the Pacific and worldwide.
