The NATO Deputy Secretary General, Ambassador Alexander Vershbow visited Skopje on Wednesday, 18 July 2012, as part of a visit to the three countries in the Balkans that aspire to NATO membership.
“The Chicago Summit made clear the importance that NATO continues to attach to the Open Door Policy and to the Western Balkans region. We want to move enlargement forward” the Deputy Secretary General said. "Courageous political decisions are needed so that your country's strategic goal of NATO and EU membership can be achieved. Because the future of this whole region is integration in the Euro-Atlantic family" he added.
During his visit, Ambassador Vershbow met with Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikola Poposki, Minister of Defence Fatmir Besimi and with the President of the Democratic Union for Integration, Mr Ali Ahmeti, which is a key member of the coalition government.
